Simple flute warm up with improvisation

flute warm upMost people warm up with scales or tone tones. I usually start with a little bit of improvisation to get the chops going.

Most classical musicians (myself included) can be a bit uptight when it comes to improvising. We are so used to seeing music on the page – music usually ordered with beats, bars and phrases – that we find it difficult to let go of the notation.

It is as if the notation is a security device. We need to set ourselves free.

Doing a little improv in our flute warm up is the perfect time to get the chops going before moving onto scales, long tones or pieces.
